From Yahoo Australia:  Kate Winslet: ‘Divorce has been good for my kids’

The 39-year-old Oscar-winning actress says her two divorces have helped teach her children how to “struggle”.

“I think it’s very important to teach your children to struggle on some level,” she said.

If her rule of thumb is the more mom induced family chaos the better, Winslet is living up to her own standards.  According to the article Winslett has three children by three baby daddies:

Kate is mum to Mia, 14, from her marriage to Jim Threapleton, and Joe, 11, from her second marriage to director Sam Mendes and she gave birth two-year-old son Bear in 2013 with husband Ned Rocknroll.

The Independent has a similar article.

Update:  In a 2013 article (HT CCG) the Daily Mail quoted an interview with Vogue where Winslet told a different story.  While Winslet now claims the suffering her divorces caused her children was good for them, she previously claimed they didn’t suffer at all:

‘People go, “Oh, my God! Those poor children! They must have gone through so much”.

‘Says who? They’ve always been with me. They don’t go from pillar to post; they’re not flown here and there with nannies.

‘That’s never happened. My kids don’t go back and forth; none of this 50/50 time with the mums and dads – my children live with me; that is it. That is it!’

The Daily Mail article notes that this statement lead to an advertising campaign by Fathers 4Justice centered around Winslet.  It also notes that one of Winslet’s baby daddies has been supportive of the group:

In 2004 Mr Threapleton spoke out in support of the group, claiming he went months without seeing Mia.

  5. JDG says:

“I think it’s very important to teach your children to struggle on some level,” she said.

How about teaching them how to struggle to make a marriage work? Is that too much for a strong independent woman?

  6. “I think it’s very important to teach your children to struggle on some level,” she said.

It’s the same reasoning I’ve heard from parents for continuing to trust their kids to the schools, despite admitting bad things happen there: “Well, I don’t want them to grow up sheltered. I went through boot camp and it made me stronger. The hard knocks will toughen them up and prepare them for the difficulties of life.”

To which I reply, “Hey, I hear prison really toughens people up; maybe you should send them there too.” It’s one thing to look for the silver lining when you’re in a bad situation without a choice, or to occasionally push your kids into a difficult short-term situation to teach them a lesson. It’s something else to intentionally put your kids in years-long, painful, harmful circumstances and claim you’re doing them a favor.

  7. CCG says:

Kate Winslet is also an example of hypergamy – she took up with the famous director Sam Mendes while still married to the practically unknown director Jim Threapleton.

On a business trip with my colleagues we had some time to kill, so we all went to see “Contagion.” None of us particularly liked it, but one of the guys hated it with every fiber of his being. My response to him was, “Come on… any movie where Kate Winslet’s character dies a horrible death can’t be all bad!”

  9. Dave says:

    OK playing the devil’s advocate.
None of these men was particularly too poor or too beta to find a woman worthy of being bestowed the title of a wife. Why in the world would any of them (except, maybe the first husband) choose Kate Winslet for a wife?
And Sam Mendes is just as much without self respect as Kate, for allowing themselves to be led by their tingles rather than by common sense and reason. Both deserve one another, and I am not sorry that their shameless lust disguised as a marriage didn’t last.

Sadly, she isn’t living in a cave, hence she is a thrice-divorced liar. I’m sure these kids will turn out great! Look at all the struggle!

  11. Neguy says:

It’s actually right that we need to teach our kids to cope with struggle. But to rebrand our own selfishness and sin as somehow rebounding to someone else’s benefit is like Joseph’s brothers saying it all cool they’d sold him into slavery in Egypt because look at at how many lives got saved.

“Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet opened up in a new interview, admitting she won’t let anything get in the way of slowing down her career, not even her most current role as mum to her three children.
While the 38-year-old actress just gave birth to five-month old son Bear Blaze in December, she spoke to Harper’s Bazaar and admitted: “It’s time to get back.”
She added: “Back to the ‘I don’t f**k around’, back to the KW basics of take some serious risks, put yourself out there. And just really push it.”

Yup, can’t see any long-term consequences for the kids there. Gotta luv a grounded gal who refers to herself as “KW” (part of the Reading Massive, apparently). Narcissistic Illeism always a good sign in someone who prides herself on not being a diva. You might wonder proudly stating ‘I don’t f**k around’ after your third child by your third baby-daddy might have given even KW pause for thought.

  19. What makes me sad is only partially how much her children will be destroyed, but mostly that society largely views Kate’s beliefs in this manner as perfectly logical.

I came across the Daliy Mail article a few days ago, and I must say the funniest comment I saw was this:
‘There will be no harder struggle than being called Bear Blaze Rocknroll’.
There is some truth to that…

This article is indeed sad to read because it is not like we don’t know by now the impact of divorce on kids.
If this article had been from say 1930, one could be forgiven on the basis of ignorance – because of course there weren’t the hoardes of children suffering the divorce of their parents at that time.

It’s a bit like smoking…if a person said ‘smoking is GOOD for you in 1930, that would be forgiveable, because it was not known at that time how bad it can be for general health.
But today, if anyone said that, it would be wrong, because we all know how bad it is.

    So shame on Kate Winslet.

It bothers me because the underlying intent is to have the masses of regular folks emulate people like KW. Only the regular kids’ mommies and daddies don’t have tens of millions of dollars to cushion the hardships that divorce brings with it. Lionizing this skank is indirectly subjecting thousands of innocent children to various levels of misery they might not otherwise have had to endure.

That makes me angry. But if anyone dare speak the truth about her actions and call them what they are — evil. They are immediately marginalized as some kind of misogynistic religious nutcase– just another mean, narrow-minded @sshole who like to deny people their happiness.

Nice little bit of the Female Imperative in this story – My kids, for a start. Mine, me, mine. This is what one version of matriarchy looks like. Her kids are “stronger” only in the sense that they can cope with her whims, that does not make them actual independent, self sufficient people.

Riffing off of Cail Corishev, when actresses crib from dorm-room Nietzsche in the “whatever does not kill me, makes me stronger” sense, they generally are just posing for a camera. I”m sure she’d never consider dropping one or more of her kids with some group in the outback, to learn survival for a week. Because that would require letting her kids learn something from someone not under her control.

In many cultures, a boy is raised by his mother until the age of 5 to 7, then he goes with his father. Wonder why that is so common? Must be a konspiracy of teh Patriarchy, couldn’t just be something that “just works”. But I don’t know, I have missed so very many, many sekret meetings of the Patriarchy, I”m way behind on my konspiracies.

This woman [Kate Winslet] cannot substitute the role of a father. No amount of money or resources can ever replace what she has taken away from those children. Hopefully the children won’t end up in rehab or prison but that’s where most of them go. And the travesty will be when the blame is put on the absent fathers.

Are you serious? Of course a white father wants and expects his daughter to marry within her own race. Other races do the same for the most part. This is totally reasonable on his part, and not subject to any kind of valid criticism.

  66. @Paul
Before you say “racisss” you may want to take a look at Nehemiah 13. When you get done with that, take a look at Ezra 9:1-2. Then you get into both the direct and general meaning of the multiple references to not be unequally yoked. I seldom quote commentary, but for the very conservative I think Rushdoony has stated it so well that it bears repeating:

St. Paul referred to the broader meaning of these laws against hybridization, and against yoking an ox and an ass to a plow (Deut. 22:10), in II Corinthians 6:14. . . . Unequal yoking plainly means mixed marriages between believers and unbelievers and is clearly forbidden. But Deuteronomy 22:10 not only forbids unequal religious yoking by inference, and as a case law, but also unequal yoking generally. This means that an unequal marriage between believers or between unbelievers is wrong. Man was created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26), and woman in the reflected image of God in man, and from man (I Cor. 11:1-12; Gen. 2:18, 21-23). “Helpmeet” means a reflection or mirror, an image of man, indicating that a woman must have something religiously and culturally in common with her husband. The burden of the law is thus against inter-religious, inter-racial, and inter-cultural marriages, in that they normally go against the very community which marriage is designed to establish.
(From” R.J. Rushdoony, The Institutes of Biblical Law, p. 256f.)

I guess it comes down to culture and the fact the root word of culture is cult: Meaning a common belief. I’ve known many inter-racial marriages in the US and never seen one last and I put that down to a combination of cultural and inherent racial differences that are easily observable in large population groups. It even works out in their order of worship, their view of how a passage of Scripture should be read and what being a Christian means. I have worshiped with many different congregations and groups in multiple countries and even within the frame of all being believers it is my experience that a couple of believers can still be unequally yoked even though they both claim the name of Christ. You can call me a racist all you want, but there is significant textual support for a prohibition on miscegenation in Scripture (although I will admit there is no outright prohibition).

The countervailing point of view is (of what I normally see) is pretty well summed up here:

    http://www.biblestudy.org/basicart/interracial-dating.html

I think that it’s reasonable to expect different opinions on what Scripture is saying to the individual as they are informed by the Holy Spirit. However, we are commanded to seek wisdom and it seems to me that the abject failure of multiculturalism and the ongoing destruction of western culture should speak loudly on this issue. This is not in any way to start a flame-war or a HBD debate, I’m just looking at the big picture.
